		<description>Baby in the Bathtub
Pen &#38; Ink
841x594mm
The insufferable arrogance of human beings to think that Nature was made solely for their benefit, as if it was conceivable that the sun had been set afire merely to ripen men's apples and head their cabbages. ~ Savinien de Cyrano de Bergerac, États et empires de la lune, 1656

The Germans say, 'you must empty-out the bathing-tub, but not the baby along with it.' Fling-out your dirty water with all zeal, and set it careering down the kennels; but try if you can keep the little child!
~ Thomas Carlyle, 1849

		<description>Maya's White Elephant
Pen &#38; Ink
376x594mm
It is interesting to combine symbols of strength and fertility from different aspects of human culture - I was reading about the immaculate conception of Buddha and his mother Maya, who the night she became pregnant dreamt that a white elephant had delivered a lotus blossom to her womb. I wanted to illustrate this story and at the same time was looking at various electricity pylons, enjoying their shape and powerful presence in the modern landscape. Combining the two was quite straightforward, as the pylon sits neatly on the elephants back like a howdah. The Bodhi tree ties everything together, which is the tree under which Buddha gained enlightenment.
